Any water in the lift pit could damage the electrical and mechanical systems, which could cause the lift to malfunction. The situation can quickly turn dangerous if water comes in contact with any electrical components of the elevator. Safety could be put at risk due to corrosion of vital lift components. Repairing the lift mechanism and electrical system after damage might be expensive. Sump pumps are not advised unless the disposal of any water from the lift pit is carried out in accordance with environmental laws since the water in the lift pit can be contaminated by oil and grease from the lift equipment. Even if a lift pit has a sump pump, severe rains may prevent the water from dispersing because storm drains and sewers are overloaded, which causes pits to back up. Moreover, an accumulation of condensation and stagnant water in the lift pit may result in the production of a bad odour known as a "rotten egg" odour, which is brought on by hydrogen-sulfide gas produced by anaerobic decomposition.
